Development of every learner
At The King’s School we endeavour to provide an environment that embraces and values the uniqueness of each individual and helps them grow into all that God has made them to be.
We have a full-time Educational Psychologist who works with learners from preschool to matric, at no extra charge. Through play therapy and counselling sessions learners are supported through the inevitable challenges of life: such as bereavement or traumatic experiences. Our Psychologist also focuses on positive growth: developing areas such as emotional intelligence, friendship skills, stress management, study skills, subject choice & career guidance. These aspects are also integrated more broadly into school life, for example through Life Orientation lessons and school assemblies
- There is an Occupational Therapist and Speech Therapist who run private practices from the school and this means sessions can conveniently be arranged for during the school day. These professionals liaise with our Learning Support Teachers as part of our School Based Support team. This team works together in partnership with teachers and parents to strategize as how best to support each learner.
- In our Foundation phase we are using the RAVE-O programme which is a small-group, evidence-based literacy intervention curriculum which enhances learners’ reading and comprehension skills. This complements additional pull-out and in-class support offered in the key areas of literacy and numeracy. This learning support is continued in the Intermediate phase by subject specialist teachers.
- In the high school, extra lessons are offered after school by subject teachers in key areas. Test and exam accommodations are another avenue of available support across all grades.
- Something unique to our school is our mentoring programme. Learners from Grade 4 to Grade 12 spend time in smaller groups with a mentor teacher in which relevant topics, for example conflict management, friendships, and the responsible use of social media, are discussed.
- As a school we celebrate the progress that each learner makes.
- We are a family school where “every learner is valued”.
